Chapter 23

Brett

What I haven’t told Sarah is that tonight we’re sleeping somewhere special. I want every day to be an amazing experience for us both. That way, the whole trip will be a memory we can share together. If I’m lucky, our time here will be a springboard to a whole new relationship. I’m determined to include Sarah in my life, if only she’ll let me.

“You ready to go yet?” I cry out from the wooden deck of the cozy villa.

Sarah insisted on dressing formally, as she puts it, because we’ve worn swimwear all day. I’ve made an effort too, and put on some pants and a t-shirt.

When she finally shows her face, it was worth the wait. She looks stunning in a blue floral dress with an elegant chiffon overwrap. My sister taught me the importance of observing what a woman wears.

“You look wonderful and the blues match your eyes,” I say, smiling. “This might sound corny but you look picture perfect.”

“Why, thank you, Brett, it’s nice of you to notice all the effort I’ve put into my first evening with you.”

Our seaplane has already arrived and awaits us elsewhere but close by.

“Why are we leaving the island?” Sarah asks as we board the plane.

“My lips are sealed,” I tell her. “We’ll be back later.”

We take off straight away and head toward another island. The seaplane is soon hovering over a villa with a long jetty because it’s in the middle of a large lagoon.

“This is it. We’re staying in a sunken retreat tonight.” I point along the jetty as we disembark and walk toward a villa that stands on its own in the middle of a lagoon.

“What an odd little place all on its own in the middle of the sea,” she states. “Why have we changed villas?”

“Don’t you like being set out in the middle of the ocean?” I ask her. “This place has its own butler called Alima. Look, she’s coming to greet us,” I point out. “It’s also got a world-renowned chef, Jeremy, who’s cooking for us this evening. Come on, let’s go look around the villa,” I say, taking her hand and leading her along the wooden walkway to meet with Alima.

“It’s a magnificent place, Brett, but I thought we were just going to dinner?”

“Dinner will be very tasty, don’t worry. I promised you an adventure and your first night will be a unique experience. Can you show us the special room, Alima?” I ask, as we follow our very own butler through a large airy villa, and then down a spiral staircase. When we reach the bottom, we arrive in an enormous transparent dome. The master bedroom is situated under the sea.

“Tonight, we can sleep with the fishes. That’s after we’ve eaten dinner on the open deck and watched the glorious sunset.”

Sarah says nothing. Her hands cover her face and I see between her slender fingers that she has a huge smile on her face, one of wonderment.

“Brett, I’m astounded. We absolutely have to sleep down here, it’s a whole aquarium all to ourselves.
